Acupuncture is a Chinese art of healing that involves the insertion of sterile fine needles into specific parts of the body. This technique began more than 2000 years ago. It's purpose is to stimulate and activate the immune and healing systems to treat illnesses such as headaches, poor circulation, high blood pressure, arthritis, sports injuries and back pain. Needles are placed at specific points and meridian pathways to remove blockages and pain in order to bring the body into balance and harmony. Acupuncture is considered safe and may be used in conjunction with herbal medicine to move (chi, (life force energy or blood). Needles may be twirled, heated, electrically stimulated, and used with herbs. A Western scientific definition may explain acupuncture as a treatment to stimulate the bodys natural endorphins to fight pain and bring relief. Serotonin levels and neurotransmitters may be involved. There is no solid definition of how it works. Since October 2004, I have been treated by more than a dozen acupuncturists; each with their own technique and style. I have submitted to more than 80 sessions over that period. Some sessions were relaxing and energizing. Many treatments were quite painful and provided no relief at all. The images below are sample photos from my acupuncture sessions, as well as other Chinese treatment modalities. For more info on acupuncture: http://www.acupuncture.com.
